Blog: Review Pissing Contest

For a few days, I’ve watched a thread explode. Indie author aired an opinion about one line reviews, and how they are not reviews. Several others hammered on about ‘professionalism’ in reviews being ‘missing’ and blah blah blah.

It grinds my guts to a fucking knot and it pisses me off to no extent.

Here’s the thing.

AUTISTIC PEOPLE READ. INTROVERTS READ. DYSLEXIC PEOPLE READ.

Hell, there’s a list of people who has an opinion that reads .. they are BY NO MEANS professionals but they love the written word and have an opinion. Their reviews consist of one, maybe two lines IF they air it at all … And I for one, encourage it. I don’t give a shit if you merely send a thumbs up or thumbs down. I don’t mind if you send a “Thank you,”  or a “Fuck off” only. YOU , the READER, took the time to overcome whatever obstacles you may have had, and you chose to air your OPINION.

Now it gets better, because how dare you/I call that a review: Semantics. If we can’t argue in any other way, let’s argue semantics and continue to blame the readers. Because – PROFESSIONALISM!

I have been a Marketing director for a HUGE conglomeration and invested MILLIONS (You heard me) in scoping out advertising, marketing, PR, Content & SEO opportunities that PAID. I was a professional and was I asked THEN to write a review of the service/product, you could bet your fucking ass you’d get an in-depth analytical assessment WITH suggestions for possible fixes (if they were needed) And that was expected of me and what I expected of my industry peers.

But readers? Casual readers? People like my daughter who really don’t like speaking up for fear of retribution but she has an opinion she’d like to be heard… I would NEVER so much as THINK to tell her “That is not a review.” Because? In her mind, it was. In her mind she has gone through the entire process of analyzing the read, and in her mind, she had all the feels and all did all the critical assessment and found the book to be satisfactory. Therefore “I liked this,” was a review, she just didn’t type it all out to impress the gallery with her verbal astuteness!

There is an elitism currently among the ‘Industry Professionals’ that pander to their peers, rebuke the average reader and reject the below average consumer.  If that works for you, go right ahead and continue on your path … that is your niche and I wish you well …

While you do that, I will cater to the average and below average reader who, in my mind, has as much a right to express their one line of thinking, without being snuffed at.

Get over yourselves. Don’t blame your lack of success on the industry professionals or the consumers. Don’t attribute your success to your smart thinking only – without your consumers, you’d be just as screwed no matter what you do.
